Windows 10 will officially reach its end of support in October 2025, which means now is a great time to start thinking about upgrading to Windows 11. But before you dive in, there are a few important things to consider—and that’s where we at Dataforge can help.
What happens if you do not upgrade to Windows 11?
Windows 10 will continue to run after support ends, and your computer will function as it always has for a while. However, once Microsoft ends support in October 2025, there will no longer be security updates, bug fixes, or new features. Over time, third-party software (such as browsers, antivirus programs, and productivity tools) will also stop supporting Windows 10, meaning you won’t be able to install updates or newer versions.
Eventually, you’ll be limited to outdated software that’s more vulnerable to viruses, malware, and compatibility issues. While you don’t need to upgrade immediately, planning ahead ensures your system stays secure, functional, and compatible with the latest technology.
Is there any way to continue using Windows 10 and still get updates?
Microsoft is offering a limited extension called the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program.
You can enroll in ESU by one of the following three ways:
- At no additional cost if you are syncing your PC Settings
- Redeem 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points
- One-time purchase of $30 USD or local currency equivalent plus applicable tax
All enrollment options provide extended security updates through October 13, 2026. You will need to sign into your Microsoft account in order to enroll in ESU. You’ll be given these options to choose from when you enroll in the ESU program. You can use your existing ESU license on up to 10 devices.

Can Your Computer Run Windows 11?
Whether or not your current computer can upgrade to Windows 11 depends on your hardware specs. Microsoft has set minimum requirements, including:
-
A compatible 64-bit processor (usually 8th-gen Intel or newer)
-
4GB RAM minimum (8GB+ recommended)
-
TPM 2.0 security chip
-
UEFI firmware with Secure Boot
Not sure if your PC meets the requirements? Bring it to us! At Dataforge, we can check your computer’s model and serial number to look up the specs and determine if it qualifies for the upgrade.
Upgrade vs. Replace: Which Is Better?
If your current computer does meet the specs, the next question is: Is it worth upgrading?

Upgrading an older PC might cost $80–$160 in labor alone—and if the hardware is 5+ years old, it might not perform well even with Windows 11. A refurbished system may be a better investment in that case.
Upgrade Methods: Which One is Right for You?
When upgrading to Windows 11, there are a few different ways we can do it. Each method has pros and cons depending on your goals and the current state of your computer.
1. In-Place Upgrade
This method upgrades your existing Windows 10 installation directly to Windows 11 without removing your files or apps.
Pros:
-
Keeps your files, programs, and settings as they are.
-
Less time-consuming than a full reinstall.
-
Familiar layout remains.
Cons:
-
Will carry over old system problems or clutter.
-
Not ideal if your computer is already running slow or buggy.
-
Not always possible, especially on older hardware or unsupported systems.
- Risk of the upgrade failing and needing to perform a clean install anyway.
2. Clean Install with Data Restore
We back up your important files, erase the system, do a fresh install of Windows 11, and then restore your data.
Pros:
-
Gives you a clean, fast system with fewer bugs or slowdown.
-
You get to keep your documents, photos, and other personal files.
Cons:
-
Programs will need to be reinstalled manually.
-
Takes more time and effort than an in-place upgrade.
-
Personal settings will need to be reconfigured.
3. Full Wipe and Install (No Restore)
This is a full reset. We erase everything and install Windows 11 from scratch, starting fresh.
Pros:
-
Best for performance and stability.
-
Gets rid of viruses, junk software, or lingering issues.
-
Ideal if you’re already using cloud storage or don’t need old files.
- All data and programs are erased, your computer will be a new comptuer again.
Cons:
-
All data and programs are erased, your computer will be a new comptuer again.
-
Everything will be set up from scratch: programs, settings, files.
Note we put
- All data and programs are erased, your computer will be a new comptuer again.
as both a Pro and a Con here. For peopel that just do basic browsing and web based email type of work, they need nothing saved or carried over, this is a Pro. However, for people with data and programs to save and carry over this would be a con.
We’ll help you choose the method that best suits your situation. For example:
-
If your PC is running fine and just needs the OS update: In-place might be okay.
-
If your PC has been slow or buggy: Clean install is likely best.
-
If you want a totally fresh start or are donating the PC: Full wipe is ideal.
Let us know what you’re hoping to achieve—we’ll make it smooth and safe.
We recommend clean installs or full wipes for best results—especially if the computer has been running slow or had past issues.
Perfect time to upgrade!
If your computer is eligible for a Windows 11 upgrade and you choose to move forward, it’s also a great opportunity to boost its overall performance. In many cases, we can upgrade your hard drive to a faster solid-state drive (SSD) and increase the memory (RAM), both of which can significantly improve speed and responsiveness—often making your system feel like new again. We’ll be happy to assess your computer and provide recommendations along with a clear estimate of the upgrade costs
